Download Public Data

We aim to provide public periodic releases of Milky Way Project data. On this page you can download the latest release data from January 2012. We also have an explore page where you can browse the same data on-screen. Our first data release paper has been submitted to the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society and will be available on arXiv shortly. You can download a high-resolution version of the paper here. It describes the reduction of more than half a million bubble drawings by users of the Milky Way Project into a catalogue of 5,106 bubbles.

Two bubble catalogues were created for DR1. The large bubble catalogue describes the geometrically averaged parameters for the bubbles created using MWP's main bubble-drawing tool. The small bubble catalogue lists all those bubbles marked using the 'small bubble' option of the areas tool on the main interface.

In addtion to the reduced bubbles, we are also making our MWP 'heat-maps' available for download. These come as a package of FITS files displaying the raw drawings of more than half a million bubbles by users of the site. These files represent a crowd-sourced map of star formation in our Galaxy.

Many other objects have been catalogued by users of the MWP. Catalogues of green knots, red fuzzies, galaxies and star clusters will be available for download when they have been prepared by the science team.
